It is said that sapphires come in every color except red, and then its called Ruby.
Yes, Ruby is the same exact stone as sapphire……corundum.
A definition from Wikipedia as follows: Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminum oxide typically containing traces of iron, titanium, vanadium and chromium.
It is a rock-forming mineral. It is also a naturally transparent material, but can have different colors depending on the presence of transition metal impurities in its crystalline structure.
However, that definition does absolutely nothing to describe the breathtaking beauty of sapphires. The most expensive, exquisite sapphire is called Kashmir. It was discovered in the late 1800’s in the Padar portion of Kashmir in the Himalaya mountains. This prized sapphire is currently thought to have been fully mined out so no new examples have been found in over 50 years. Other fine sapphire are from Ceylon and Burma, but none exhibit the mystical beauty of the Kashmir sapphire.
Since a large fine example of sapphires can rival the value of a fine diamond, we will meet you in your bank when you want to sell sapphire jewelry in excess of $25,000.00

There are many treatments that can be performed to enhance the “look” of sapphires. These two most common are heating and fracture filling. Many times the color in a sapphire is greatly enhanced by heating. Some sapphires will have inclusions that break the surface of the stone so a molten colored glass like substance is pressure forced into that fissure to diminish its effect on the look of the stone.
It is vital that you know exactly what you are selling and that we know exactly what we are buying so we highly recommend that the stone is sent to the American Gemological Laboratory (AGL) in New York to determine if the stone has any treatments. A stone with no treatments is far more valuable than a stone that has been treated. You can send the stone to AGL, or we can do this for you. This way you will be accurately paid for the sapphire you wish to sell.
